The Secretary and the End of the BlogToday is June 27, the final day of the Pandemic Flu Leadership Blog. As of 6:00 pm EST, comments will be turned off and the contributing bloggers who have graciously given their time to this effort will no longer be able to post. The site will be archived but will continue to remain accessible. The search function will continue to work, as will the social media tools (del.icio.us and Technorati) and all links within the site. Secretary Michael O. Leavitt intended to post today to leave you with his perspective on the past five weeks of the blog, but unanticipated changes to his schedule did not permit him to do so. Therefore, Secretary Leavitt will post his final comments before the close of the week. We hope you will come back to read these concluding remarks.

Message from Blog Moderator
Message from Blog ModeratorThere has been some concern expressed that the moderation process is not as speedy as it should be and that comments are being deleted. The moderators would like to assure you that we are taking your concerns seriously, as the purpose of this blog is to host an open conversation about the importance of individual and family preparedness for pandemic flu. In an effort to establish expectations, we need to ask that you please be patient about the time period that lapses before comments are approved. We aim to keep it as short as possible, but there will be times when the approval time may take several hours. (In the interest of disclosure, there are two people taking turns moderating comments.) We will add this expectation to our Comment Policy on Monday so that there is no confusion. As far as concern that comments are being deleted, we are reviewing the spam filter more closely to determine if messages have been sent there inadvertently. Please know that a comment from Assistant Secretary Suzanne C. DeFrancis, Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs, sat in the spam folder for hours before we realized it. (In other words, this is an equal opportunity spam blocker.) For those of you who run your own blogs and moderate comments, you will know that, over time, spam blockers grow more sophisticated in being able to identify what is truly spam. As we complete Week 2 of the Pandemic Flu Leadership, we hope this will no longer be an issue. Many of you have expressed your appreciation for the creation of this blog because of the opportunity for open dialog. This, again, was our intention and we will do everything we can to maintain this ideal. We look forward to the discussion in Week 3 and appreciate your continued interest in the Pandemic Flu Leadership Blog.
